The author examines corruption within the Customs Service when smugglers bribed officials to turn a blind eye, and the cases when the whole local population was involved – including the local rector – in concealing luxury items. There are also descriptions of the smuggling gangs that terrorized the coast in some parts of England; the pitched battles between the smugglers and the revenue cutters; and outside Britain the traffic in opium in China, slave traffic, gun-running, and the trade in liquor, drugs and diamonds.
